About Widening Our Gateway

The Widening Our Gateway group of Alcoholics Anonymous promotes a tradition of free expression and strives to create a compassionate environment where alcoholics may feel free to express their own personal form of spiritual recovery.

We do not endorse or oppose any form of religion or atheism. We read the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and offer, for those who choose, a reading that is sensitive to non-believers.

Our only wish is to assure suffering alcoholics that they can find sobriety in AA without having to accept anyone else's beliefs or having to deny their own.

All are welcome to identify as they wish in sharing their experience, strength, and hope. No one need ask others to keep an open mind; it is assumed our minds are open.

Our singular purpose is recovery.

“...this was the great contribution of our atheists and agnostics. They had widened our gateway so that all who suffer might pass through, regardless of their belief or lack of belief.” -- Bill W., Alcoholics Anonymous Comes of Age, p. 167.
